United ponder late Cahill bid

Manchester United are set to launch a late bid to pinch Gary Cahill from Bolton ahead of Premier League rivals Chelsea.

Bolton and Chelsea have agreed a £7million fee for the centre-back but the move has so far failed to go through amid reported differences in the two parties' wage demands.

Cahill is expected to leave the Trotters this month but he could yet make the switch to Old Trafford rather than Stamford Bridge with Sir Alex Ferguson alerted to the fact the move appears to have hit a stumbling block.

United are in need of defensive reinforcements following a long-term injury to Nemanja Vidic and, despite Ferguson saying he does not intend to sign anyone this month, Cahill is a possibility if his proposed move to Chelsea continues to stall.
