A Critical Interrogation of Karl White's presentation at TEDxUSU: Establishing a sound foundation for children who are deaf or hard of hearing as seen on http://youtu.be/bfN1RPVuzl0.



Anyone with some level of familiarity with Deaf people will agree that there are some deep philosophical differences in how we interact with, work with, and approach Deaf children.



As such anyone who purports to be an authority on Deaf people has an ethical responsibility to be transparent.



We find it disturbing that individuals such as Karl White continue to blatantly abuse their position by misleading the general public about Deaf people, languages, and medical intervention. This is done through intentional framing, through omission of facts, and through giving appearances of neutrality when in fact bias is present.

Here we discuss some of the things we noted and/or have questions about regarding his recent presentation at TEDxUSU (published on December 5, 2012).

An attorney for Gallaudet University's chief diversity officer who has been placed on leave for signing a petition to put Maryland's same-sex marriage law on the ballot says she only signed it so the issue could be decided by the democratic process.

The Washington Post - Dr. Angela McCaskill addresses a news conference about being put on leave from her job after signing a petition to put Maryland's same-sex marriage law on the ballot for voters to decide. She is asking to be reinstated to her position.



Gallaudet University’s embattled chief diversity officer said she wasn’t taking an anti-gay stance when she signed a Petition advocating for Maryland's same-sex marriage law to be put to a vote. Instead, Angela McCaskill says she was joining 200,000 others in standing up for the rights of voters to make decisions at the ballot box.



“I thought it was important that as a citizen of the state of Maryland I could exercise my right to participate in the political process. Angela McCaskill Placed On Administrative Leave From Gallaudet

WASHINGTON - (ABC7) - The Associate Provost for Diversity and Inclusion at Gallaudet University has been placed on paid administrative leave, after allegedly signing a Maryland referendum petition opposing same sex marriage.



Dr. Angela McCaskill became a Deputy to the President and the Associate Provost for Diversity and Inclusion in January 2011. This afternoon, President Hurwitz released the following statement to students, faculty and staff:



"I want to inform the community that I have placed Dr. Angela McCaskill on paid administrative leave effective immediately. It recently came to my attention that Dr. McCaskill has participated in a legislative initiative that some feel is inappropriate for an individual serving as Chief Diversity Officer; however, other individuals feel differently. I will use the extended time while she is on administrative leave to determine the appropriate next steps taking into consideration the duties of this position at the university. In the meantime an interim Chief Diversity Officer will be announced in the near future."

Gallaudet University’s chief diversity officer was placed on paid leave on Wednesday after school officials learned that she signed a petition challenging a new same-sex marriage law in Maryland.



Angela McCaskill, who has worked for more than 20 years at the university for the deaf and hard of hearing, was among more than 200,000 Maryland residents to sign a petition seeking a referendum vote on the measure. The petition succeeded, and enactment of the law was put on hold pending the outcome of the referendum in November.

Rochester's Deaf Population Among Largest Per Capita in U.S.

ROCHESTER, NY. - Rochester has more Deaf and Hard of Hearing residents per capita than the national average and a larger Deaf population than many other similarly sized cities, a new report out of Rochester Institute of Technology has found.



Rochester’s sizable Deaf community has often been assumed but was never quantified until the report, written by Gerard Walter and Richard Dirmyer from RIT’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf.



The study found other cities have more total Deaf residents per capita, but among college and working aged people, Rochester has one of the largest populations in the country. In particular, the study found Rochester has far and away the highest percentage of Deaf residents enrolled in secondary education, likely driven by NTID.



“Often times it’s difficult to understand how many people are really in the community,” said Thomas Pearson, director of the National Center for Deaf Health Research at the University of Rochester. “This has been a real challenge for anyone interested in the field.”



Using American Community Survey data, Walter and Dirmyer found there are 43,000 Deaf or Hard of Hearing residents in the Rochester metro area, about 3.7 percent of the population. That’s higher than the national average, which is 3.5 percent.



Rochester doesn’t have the highest population per capita as is often suggested, however. The report only looked at a handful of cities, but found 3.9 percent of Pittsburgh’s population is Deaf or Hard of Hearing. The authors of the report attribute that to more elderly residents living in Pittsburgh than in Rochester, and the onset of age-related deafness.

University Students Educated Of The Audism

Eugene, OR. - You've heard of sexism, racism, anti-Semitism... How about audism? Audism is discrimination based on the ability or inability to hear. Students met members of the local Deaf community, who shared their encounters with audism, and their experiences growing up Deaf in a hearing world.



Johanna Larson, University of Oregon, American Sign Language Instructor, moderated a screening of the documentary film, Audism Unveiled, and a panel discussion hosting members of our local Deaf community, who shared their encounters with audism, and their experiences growing up Deaf in a hearing world.

The film and discussion facilitated an examination of the rich and complex identities of Deaf Culture through "real life experiences from Deaf people of varied social, racial, and educational backgrounds-showing how audism does lasting and harmful damage." The event also included live transcription for the signing impaired.

Crowdsourcing could help Deaf People subtitle their everyday life! Subtitles make TV far more accessible for DEAF people, but new research promises to give people with hearing difficulties the option to subtitle their everyday lives, too, using crowdsourced transcribers.



Researchers from the University of Rochester have developed an app which allows Deaf individuals to read subtitles that correspond to what's happening to them, in their day-to-day lives.

Dropout Rate Among Mainstream Deaf Students

Video documentary about dropout rate among mainstream Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in American sign language.



Students with hearing loss attending general education classrooms have been reported to experience difficulties in social skills and relationships. This 5-year longitudinal study examined the social skills and problem behaviors of students who were Deaf or Hard of Hearing, and who attended general education classrooms. Data were obtained from classroom teachers and students themselves.



The mean Social Skills and Problem Behavior scores (Social Skills Rating Scales; Gresham & Elliott, 1990) were within the average range and normally distributed each year. The average change over 5 years in social skills and problem behavior was not significant.

The most consistent predictors of social outcomes were the students" classroom communication participation and participation in extracurricular activities.
