Many states have passed laws allowing credit for ASL classes as a foreign language but they have stopped short of recognizing its benefits as a language of instruction in schools, despite studies proving its benefits for students.

Grand Island, Nebraska (1011now) School Sign Language Controversy - Steve Ross Reports at 9. Grand Island Preschooler Asked to Change the Sign for His Name in School.



School demands that boy must change his name from Hunter because it violates its weapons policy. Hunter Spanjer says his name with a certain special hand gesture, but at just three and a half years old, he may have to change it.



"He's deaf, and his name sign, they say, is a violation of their weapons policy," explained Hunter's father, Brian Spanjer.



Grand Island Public Schools's "Weapons in Schools" Board Policy 8470 forbids "any instrument...that looks like a weapon," But a three year-old's hands?



"Anybody that I have talked to thinks this is absolutely ridiculous. This is not threatening in any way," said Hunter's grandmother Janet Logue.



"It's a symbol. It's an actual sign, a registered sign, through S.E.E.," Brian Spanjer said.



S.E.E. stands for Signing Exact English, Hunter's sign language. Hunter's name gesture is modified with crossed-fingers to show it is uniquely his own.



"We are working with the parents to come to the best solution we can for the child," said Jack Sheard, Grand Island Public Schools spokesperson.



That's just about all GIPS officials will say for now.



Meantime, Hunter's parents say that by Monday, lawyers from the National Association of the Deaf are likely to weigh in for Hunter's right to sign his own name.



Despite whatever rules and regulations may exist, some Grand Islanders we spoke with said they don't think it's right to make a three year-old change the way he says his name.



"It's his name. It's not like he's going to bring a gun to school when he's three years old," commented Dana Schwieger.



"I find it very difficult to believe that the sign language that shows his name resembles a gun in any way would even enter a child's mind," Grand Island resident Fredda Bartenbach reflected.



But for now, that's a discussion between the Spanjers and Grand Island Public Schools officials.

In a horrible case of political correctness gone wrong, a
deaf boy is being told he's not allowed to sign his name at school
anymore. School officials need a lesson in common sense.

Hunter Spanjer is like any other three-year-old
boy: he goes to pre-school, plays with friends, and learns new things
every day. If the local school district has its way, Hunter may have to
learn how to say his name, all over again.

Hunter is deaf, and communicates using sign language. School officials in his district are upset at the way his name is signed; they
claim that the sign may look like wagging guns and that the perceived
action is potentially threatening and inappropriate for the school
environment.

The officials at the school
district seems to be the only people who feel threatened by Hunter's
name; the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Association of
the Deaf have both urged the school board to reconsider its situation,
and the general feeling is that the school is reading too much into an
innocuous sign.

They are absolutely right.
Forcing Hunter to change the way he signs his name is like changing his
name itself. No school should be able to force a child to change her or
his name because of an over-extension of political correctness. Hunter's
signing of his name is not a threat to anyone at the school or in the
school district; it is his way of connecting with people, making
friends, and forging his identity.

I have no
doubt that the school district will realize its folly and reverse their
decision soon, if not today. Their knee-jerk reaction was made without
any common sense or any concern over the well-being of their student — a
contrarian behavior from an organization that is supposed to have the
well-being of the student as their primary concern.

Until
then, let's make sure that the school officials realize that sometimes
decisions need to be made with a little thought and a little context,
rather than in a vacuum from up high. And let's make sure little Hunter
knows that his name is his own, and he should be proud of it and proud
of who he is.

Dropout Rate Among Mainstream Deaf Students

Students with hearing loss attending general education classrooms have been reported to experience difficulties in social skills and relationships. This 5-year longitudinal study examined the social skills and problem behaviors of students who were Deaf or Hard of Hearing, and who attended general education classrooms. Data were obtained from classroom teachers and students themselves.



The mean Social Skills and Problem Behavior scores (Social Skills Rating Scales; Gresham & Elliott, 1990) were within the average range and normally distributed each year. The average change over 5 years in social skills and problem behavior was not significant.

A heart touching story of a Deaf girl. her story, her speaking, her heart, poured out. If you are Deaf, hearing impaired, or just don't understand, here is what she said.



I was born with a hearing impairment. I was Deaf completly till the age of 6 because my parents got me hearing devices. But since I first stepped in elementary school, there was never a day someone would push me down, call me names, not talk to me, and mostly, never a day that my own school teacher would respect me.



I was stupid, and I was dumb. I would get best up at school because when I say "what, I can't hear you.." they would take that as sarcasm. I got referrals, suspensions, and got kicked out of school for things i haven't done. I was accused of "smoking in the bathroom" in my 4th grade year. I was "accused of beating up 3 girls in the back of school" when I didn't even know how to fight, and in field trips the principal was always picking me up and taking me to detention because I would get into fights, but they would pick up the ones who fought with me.



I was always in trouble for standing for myself. My own principal abused me, and even had me hold back a year in school for no reason whatsoever, almost fired my mom from her job and I left my last day of school with a concussion and four stab wounds on my back from those tacks that pin papers with on the wall because of this girl that would always fight me. I only had 1 friend in those years. but she was worse than me, she commit suicide at the age of thirteen I was eleven, I call the cops on it cause I had to watch her die.

Sad thing is I couldn't even attend the funeral, the parents had her buried in Arizona. I became suicidal, cut, drank smoked. I joined martial arts later. and I'm still in martial arts now to this day.



In 6th grade, I started having friends. People knew not to mess with me cause all this made me stronger. and I always had to get in a fight. But I was so happy when I didn't lose my first real fight that gained me full respect.



I was wondered though, why people are so cruel still. Especially when someone has a disability they have to live with there whole life, and they laugh about it. Actions may be stronger than words, but no one said words didn't hurt as well. I'm still hurt though. because its been since 6th grade that no ones bothered me until like two weeks ago, I cried my eyes out and just broke down, because this girl in my class would say "I m surprised you can hear the school bell." with a smirk.



If only i could put all those people in my shoes, and show them what its like to be like this, alone, rejected, hurt to judge what you don't understand. This is why I decide to give hugs. because in those times, nobody was there to give me one. No one deserves to live my life, a life without anyone beside them. I Love you guys, I promise. Guys,



If you lived with a disability, a bad habit, a different sexual orientation, or an impairment, and you blame it for all your problems, and what you've been through in your past, DON'T. Thank god for it. why?



It makes you stronger than anyone else that consider thereselves "normal", and you being the "Abnormal, weird, strange" person. It makes you more confident than others, and more tougher through out life. Don't reflect the pain you went through on others, turn that pain into something greater, and give something to others, that you never had before like friendship, love, HUGS kisses.
