NAIROBI - As the preparation for the first ever presidential debate in Kenya gathers momentum, Kenyans' excitement and eagerness for this historic debate is very evident.

But unfortunately this is not the case for the Kenya National Association For The Deaf as they held protests yesterday at the Ministry of Information demanding for their right to access information.

Gay Deaf Man Sues D.C. Jail For Mistreatment

VIDEO: FOX 5 - Deaf man alleges mistreatment at D.C. jail.

WASHINGTON, DC - A former inmate in the District of Columbia correctional system is suing the city for alleged mistreatment. The D.C. man is Deaf, and the lawsuit claims he was unable to effectively communicate during his period of confinement. It also alleges his treatment got worse when he complained.

44-year-old William Pierce is profoundly Deaf. He wound up with a 60-day sentence in the city's correction system after an altercation with his partner resulted in a conviction for simple assault.

At the order of the judge, Pierce actually wound up in the Correctional Treatment Facility to get help. The CTF adjoins the city jail.

Arthur Spitzer, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of the Nation's Capital, said in an interview: "There was no interpreter there for [Pierce] at intake, or at any of his medical appointments, he had some medical problems or at any of his classes. He was taking an anger management class, and he didn't know what was going on. He didn't know what people were saying. He couldn't participate in the group discussion(s)."

The lawsuit says, under the Americans with Disabilities Act, accommodations for the Deaf must be made so inmates can communicate. Things got worse for William Pierce when he complained, according to his attorney. ... Read more: http://www.myfoxdc.com/story/20943928/deaf-man-alleges-mistreatment-at-dc-jail#axzz2KD4UbjPN

Washington Blade - Gay Deaf man sues city for mistreatment.

WASHINGTON, DC - In a lawsuit filed in federal court on Feb. 1, a former D.C. jail inmate who’s Deaf and gay, accuses the city’s Department of Corrections of engaging in disability-related discrimination by refusing to provide him basic services required by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

William Pierce, 44, who was sentenced to two months in a city jail for an assault conviction, charges in the lawsuit that jail officials repeatedly refused to provide a sign language interpreters as required by law and retaliated against him for complaining about his conditions by placing him in solitary confinement.

Pierce, who has HIV, was given only three of the four HIV medications he had been taking at home and was unable to understand why prison doctors changed his medication regimen because of the lack of a sign language interpreter, the lawsuit says.

It says the emotional distress Pierce suffered due to the alleged discriminatory treatment was heightened when jail guards handcuffed him shortly before his mother arrived for a visit, preventing him from communicating with her in sign language.

The District of Columbia needs to be held accountable for its outright discrimination and reminded that people with disabilities cannot just be locked away and ignored,” said Arthur Spitzer, legal director of the ACLU of the Nation’s Capital, which filed the lawsuit on Pierce’s behalf in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Spitzer said most of the alleged discriminatory actions against Pierce took place at the D.C. Jail’s Correctional Treatment Facility. The CTF is operated by the Corrections Corporation of America, a private company under contract with the city.

“D.C., in turn, needs to hold the Corrections Corporation of America accountable for its continued disregard for the wellbeing of the individuals the city has placed in its care,” Spitzer said in a statement. ... Deaf Students Lack Interpretors

The Montana Kaimin - Deaf students outnumber interpreters 2-1; school struggles to meet demand.

MISSOULA - A shortage of sign language interpreters in Missoula has left the University of Montana stretching resources thin for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

Denise May, the lead interpreter at UM, said Missoula County Public Schools and the University already employ every certified interpreter who wants to work in the region.

"Interpreters are scarce and we could use more," May said. "For example, tomorrow, besides covering all the classes, there's a rodeo club meeting, a mid-year report, a Montana Council for Exceptional Children conference, and others have called asking for interpreters that can work in the community."

There are eight full-time Deaf students attending the University this semester double the number of available full-time sign-language interpreters at UM.

The Americans with Disabilities Act requires businesses and universities to provide equal access to persons with disabilities including effective communication services. ... Read more: http://www.montanakaimin.com/news/article_ed86fc92-70e8-11e2-b6fb-001a4bcf6878.html

Profound Audism At Gallaudet University

Video: Audism at Gallaudet University in American Sign Language.

Out of the entire world, within the walls of Gallaudet University Deaf Space. Profound Audism occurred. SimComm destroys both ASL and English. Audism also destroys respect for Deaf people and their Deaf World especially at Gallaudet University.

I experienced profound Audism in Gallaudet University out of all places in the world. A place where the environment is safe for all Deaf people. This intrusion of SimComm and voicing is very irritating. I was not even angry at all at first. I wanted to give positive exposure to the fact it's not a good manner and that it is very disrespectful to Deaf people in general when hearing people SimComm, talking with the voice, using cell phones, etc.

Video by spdundas37

I was hoping for dialogue and discussion to bring better understanding, respect and knowledge, but instead, this hearing student who claim to be a Coda got up and yelled at me with such profound venom, disrespect and hate. Such display of profound oppression has left me shocked and loss of words and thoughts. It even affected my friends at the table.

What hurts me more is that there are other Deaf people there who agreed with me, but sat and did nothing to stand up against Audism. I was even more shocked with the level of apathy. Are we so oppressed and thinking it's so difficult to fight it and we give up and just succumb to it?

I need your help to put an end to Audism from hearing students and put an end to apathy of Deaf people or their lack of courage to stand up for ASL and Deaf World.

My vlog is not an attempt to degrade or belittle other people most especially the hearing group/Coda I was referring about. My point was to bring this up to discussion and to raise awareness of Audism and acknowledgement of Deaf Space at Gallaudet University.

Please remain respectful and civil to each other in hopes we all meet together in harmony and mutual respect. Finally, I truly want to thank those who have shown support and encouragement. Thank you. Shane.

Deaf Education Reform Act Petition

The explanation of Deaf education reform act petition. The Obama administration to recognize American Sign Language. Here's the video clips of the petition information in ASL with captions. Deaf community have to ACT now to cherish ASL which is a part of Deaf culture.

Please sign the petition to recognize ASL as an official school language. The Obama Administration to officially recognize American Sign Language as a community language and a language of instruction in schools.

For more than a hundred years, American Sign Language (ASL) has been persecuted as a "lesser" language. It is a homegrown and complete language that has survived efforts to wipe it out.

Yet today, ASL is still considered "foreign" and not given the respect and protection it needs. Many states have passed laws allowing credit for ASL classes as a foreign language but they have stopped short of recognizing its benefits as a language of instruction in schools, despite studies proving its benefits for students.

Official federal recognition will finally give ASL the "welcome home" it needs. We need 25,000 by December 12, 2012.

Should We Get Rid of Small d in Deaf ?

Vlog in American Sign Language - Should We Get Rid of Small d in Deaf ?

Transcript: The topic about small d and big D for Deaf bothers me. I don't know about you but I have mixed feelings because it splits the groups as those who are labeled as small d and big D.

According to Deaf in America, Voices from a Culture, I am raising a question if the idea if outdated. Why? In 1972, James Woodward proposed "to use the lowercase deaf when referring to the audiological condition of not hearing, and the uppercase Deaf when referring to a particular group of deaf people who share a language -- ASL and a culture." ~From Deaf in America, Voices from a Culture. As seen on article: Got D for Dandy and for Deaf?

I used to think that way before as I had studied about it back in the 80's. At that time, most people seemed to agree about the concept. But now my thinking about it has changed. Why? I have several reasons to get rid of small d/big D concept but still keep the big D only. Why?

Even a person who don't identify themselves as a Deaf person and is not immersed in ASL and Deaf culture call themselves alternatively such as hearing impaired, hard of hearing or a person with a hearing loss as they avoided labeling themselves deaf which is their decision so why should we continue to use small d? What should we do with a small d in Deaf? Just get rid of it! But continue to use big D. Why? Here are several justifications.

Must we know the language? Yes, it is important but allow me to present the points. People, in general, who belong to their ethnic groups like Italian, African, etc. Do they use small i in Italian, nor small a in African although not all of them know the language or even culture especially here in America but we still refer them capital I in Italian-American or a in African-American. I am Italian but I don't know the language so should I call myself small i? Heck, no because it doesn't work that way. So why should it be different for the Deaf?

The big D in Deaf is used regardless of not having full understanding of ASL or Deaf culture. They will continue to go through a process experiencing what we call Deafhood. They will get to that point. Let's say when they finally get to the meat of ASL and Deaf culture, then they "graduated" to earn a big D? No! Deafhood is a process. That's why this kind of thinking is considered new that caused me to question whether or not that topic in the book is considered outdated.

Do you think that no, we should keep on labeling small d and big D or keep the big D for all regardless of not having the knowledge of ASL and culture and that big D represents a cultural group anyway.

Ban On Bulk SMS Hits Deaf People Hard

NewsX: Ban on bulk SMS hits Deaf people hard of the nation India.

NEW DELHI - The Government of India's blanket ban orders on limiting the number of SMSes may have been rational in terms of its bid to stop miscreants from sending bulk sms that spread panic. But there's a whole new segment that finds the clock stops as soon as the smses stop.

The most inconvenienced by this order are the 1.8 million hearing & speech impaired citizens of the nation. It began as a move to stem the exodus of North Eastern citizens... arising out of rumours being spread by certain vested interest groups.

Video by newsxlive

The government in an effort to stop these messages initiated a ban on more than 5 sms from any pre-paid number for 15 days. Amidst criticism and growing public outcry the govt increased the limit to 20 sms a day. A Deaf person would require to send anywhere between 100 to 250 sms' per day to carry on with their basic activities... Read more: http://www.newsx.com/videos/ban-bulk-sms-hits-speech-impaired-hard?

ASL Education: Advice For The Students

Video: ASL Education: Advice for the students.

This video is in response to another, named "American Sign Language Teaching, On Behalf of the Deaf Community."

Rather than attack teachers with blanket statements, which may or may not be justified on a case-by-case basis, it's best that students be directly educated to choose the best ASL teachers.

If you, as a student, would read every Amazon.com review in deciding whether or not to purchase a $10 cookbook, but blindly spend hundreds of dollars on an ASL course you know nothing about, you have to examine your priorities, frankly.

Video by ASLstudents2012

If you want to take ASL and really learn the language, you cannot simply rely on the knowledge of college administrators who hire adjunct instructors. You have to ask people who know much more. The answer may surprise you. The best available teacher might be hearing. But, if that's the case, then I can practically guarantee that your teacher did everything they possibly could to learn directly from the Deaf community. You must accept this path to learning as well.

Don't become discouraged. Learn ASL. But to teach, you absolutely must have skills on par with the best of the best ASL teachers. Would you want anything less to be true of your own teachers?

ASL Community Outraged Over 'Super Smutty Sign Language'

The book 'Super Smutty Sign Language' by Kristin Henson has angered and caused protest amongst many members of the American Sign Language community. Read more http://www.readthehorn.com/news/61173/deaf_community_outraged_by_dirty_sign_language_book

This vblog discussing to support of the Petition we hopeful that we can recognize that we may overlook after a video publication, the video on the internet was met with a strong reaction from the ASL-users community. Many members of the community have objected to the video on the grounds that it features incomprehensible signs that from Kristin Henson's 'Dirty Signs with Kristin' which this is a saddening testimony to how ignored and oppressed the ASL Deaf community. A Hearing Opinion on Kristin and Her Dirty Signs

Just a little summary so you know what my opinion is in the meantime... I think that a hearing person (like Kristin and myself) needs to understand their place in the Deaf-world and community. We should never consider ourselves experts on sign language, we should never ignore Deaf people about their own language, and we should never appropriate their culture for monetary gain, which I feel Kristin is doing with her videos and new book deal.

Filmmaker/Video by sirandrewASL

Kristin Henson's Youtube vlogs has attracted an audience of more than 1,5 million and 11,615 subscribers but Deaf viewers are outraged by nonsensical signing claiming 'Dirty Signs With Kristin'. Leading campaigner who want a good quality of learning American Sign Language for Deaf and hearing adults as Kristin claimed "About Kristin Henson Page". Deafies viewers said incoherent videos makes second-class citizens out of disability sufferers, ASL-users community view is that what she is doing is a classic case of exploitation. This is a phrase and no-so-subtle message for Kristin Henson, who butchers and disrespects the langauge of the ASL-users community for cheap laughs and her 15 minutes of fame as seen on: A phrase in ASL just for Kristin Henson

Last a few weeks ago, A Deaf vlogger's name is Victoria just released video with captions to response for "Dirty Signs With Kristin" - Featuring Kristin Henson in which the videos was under FIRE for flubbing a many wrong gestures of dirty signs and insulted the ASL-Culture community.
