Deaf Students Lack Interpretors

The Montana Kaimin - Deaf students outnumber interpreters 2-1; school struggles to meet demand.

MISSOULA - A shortage of sign language interpreters in Missoula has left the University of Montana stretching resources thin for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

Denise May, the lead interpreter at UM, said Missoula County Public Schools and the University already employ every certified interpreter who wants to work in the region.

"Interpreters are scarce and we could use more," May said. "For example, tomorrow, besides covering all the classes, there's a rodeo club meeting, a mid-year report, a Montana Council for Exceptional Children conference, and others have called asking for interpreters that can work in the community."

There are eight full-time Deaf students attending the University this semester double the number of available full-time sign-language interpreters at UM.

The Americans with Disabilities Act requires businesses and universities to provide equal access to persons with disabilities including effective communication services. ... Read more: http://www.montanakaimin.com/news/article_ed86fc92-70e8-11e2-b6fb-001a4bcf6878.html

Deaf Tattoo Convention Berlin 2013

Video: Deaf Tattoo Convention Berlin (English Version)

The first International Deaf Tattoo Convention of the world was held in Berlin. Twelve tattoo artists from many countries took part. More than 900 visitors came to Berlin-Weißensee.

It was great to attend the convention. We have learned a lot and made new experiences. For example, it is not "deaf and dumb", but "Deaf". The Moderation we have completely turned at the beginning and forgot to repeat it again. But that experience at least even more viewers, as it is correct. Thanks also to the organizers, it was cool with you!

Of the convention reported Tattoo Model Mel Riot. The 2nd Deaf Tattoo Convention will be held in September 2014 in Paris.

Remark! - Sign Language Recognised In Russia

Video: Sign language recognised in Russia.

Deaf people in Russia received a late, but very precious Christmas present when Russian Sign Language was formally recognised by the Russian government on the 30th December.

The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, who was re-elected last year, formally signed the long-awaited law that will improve the rights of sign language users.

Video by RemarkLondon

The breakthrough came after years of campaigning by the All-Russian Society of the Deaf, including their President Valery Rukhledev. The development led to a very special new year's celebration for Deaf people in the country.

The good news from Russia comes nearly ten years after British Sign Language was recognised by the government in this country - in March 2003.

Pushing Science’s Limits In Sign Language Lexicon

NEW YORK (New York Times) - Pushing science’s limits in sign language lexicon. Imagine trying to learn biology without ever using the word “organism.” Or studying to become a botanist when the only way of referring to photosynthesis is to spell the word out, letter by painstaking letter.

For Deaf students, this game of scientific password has long been the daily classroom and laboratory experience. Words like “organism” and “photosynthesis” to say nothing of more obscure and harder-to-spell terms have no single widely accepted equivalent in sign language. This means that Deaf students and their teachers and interpreters must improvise, making it that much harder for the students to excel in science and pursue careers in it.

“Often times, it would involve a lot of finger-spelling and a lot of improvisation,” said Matthew Schwerin, a physicist with the Food and Drug Administration who is Deaf, of his years in school. “For the majority of scientific terms,” Mr. Schwerin and his interpreter for the day would “try to find a correct sign for the term, and if nothing was pre-existing, we would come up with a sign that was agreeable with both parties.” Read more: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/04/science/sign-language-researchers-broaden-science-lexicon.html

Your Jokes About Bloomberg's Sign Language Interpreters Aren't Funny

NEW YORK - (TheAtlanticWire)- Your Jokes About Bloomberg's Sign Language Interpreters Aren't Funny.

These days, a major world event can’t happen without an accompanying meme. During Hurricane Sandy, the new social media star is Lydia Callis, the American Sign Language interpreter who appears next to the Mayor at press conferences and whose facial expressions have garnered her an internet following and – the ultimate status symbol on the internet a fan TumblrOutlets like NPR are calling her “a star” on the level of El Bloombito, the Spanglish-snark Twitter account that added some levity to Hurricane Irene by making fun of Michael R. Bloomberg’s terrible attempts to speak Spanish.

While most of the comments about Lydia online have been positive, they’re positive in an ironic and subtly mocking sort of way. The title of the Tumblr is “Lydia Callis’ face for NYC mayor” not her whole body, just her face, as seen on YouTube with closed captioned:

Video by TopTen10Videos

Laine Nooney, a PhD candidate at SUNY-Stony Brook, tweeted that Callis is “the only SL interpreter I've ever seen who signs with a New York accent.” TruTV’s “Dumb as a Blog” even catalogued 12 of Callis’ facial expressions, giving each a nickname like “The Double Yodas” and “The Hiarious Paperback.” In some of them, Callis is articulating herself in a way that would be completely relatable to any signer. “The Double Yodas” makes fun of the sign itself two hands in “Y” shapes pulling downward, which can either mean “now” or “today” while purporting to be a joke about Callis’ facial expression in the screencap... 'SNL' Opening Skit Puts Sign Language Interpreter Front & Center

NEW YORK - (BlackBookMag) - 'SNL' Opening Skit Puts Sign Language Interpreter Front & Center.

You could tell from a mile away that Saturday Night Live was going to use Lydia Callis, Mayor Bloomberg's American Sign Language interpreter, in their opening skit. But was it ... funny?

Callis became an overnight celebrity this week for her animated facial expressions as she interpreted ASL for Michael R. Bloomberg during his many press conferences regarding Hurricane Sandy . But as journalist Lilit Marcus wrote over at the Atlantic, much of the coverage of Callis was patronizing to ASL speakers.

Marcus is the child of two hearing impaired parents and was dismayed, if not entirely surprised, that the hearing world seemed to think Callis was there to provide goofy entertainment.

SNL Bloomberg/Christie HURRICANE SANDY Press Conference.

Yes, Lydia Callis’ facial expressions and large, emphatic signs are a bit unusual among interpreters, but they’re not incorrect. Most interpreters have a difference between the way that they sign for large groups and the way that they sign for small ones. Callis’ sign style reminds me more of the way that interpreters translate at Broadway shows or at college graduations, but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong or that she’s doing it for attention...Read more: http://www.blackbookmag.com/snl-opening-skit-puts-sign-language-interpreter-front-center-1.54488

Oscar winner Marlee Matlin has lashed out at "Saturday Night Live" for poking fun at sign language during the opening skit on Saturday's show.

As regulars Fred Armisen and Bobby Moynihan impersonated New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie in the press conference sketch about the Hurricane Sandy disaster, two castmates offered comic signing beside them, which aired for the hearing-impaired people as seen on this article.

But the hearing impaired Matlin wasn't laughing, she found the skit offensive and took to Twitter.com to slam the show's producers and the stars themselves... Read more: http://tv.msn.com/tv/article.aspx?news=772980#scpshrtu

Lydia Callis: Bloomberg's Interpreter Goes Viral

NEW YORK CITY - A Rochester Institute of Technology graduate skyrocketed into fame while providing American Sign Language interpretation during New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s nationally watched news conferences.

Meet Lydia Callis, the mayor's sign language interpretor who became the city's newest hearthrob. Stealing the show with her passionate facial expressions and signs.

Clearly there is nothing funny about mass casualties and a region under water. But Lydia Callis has at least given people something to smile about in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.

The sign language interpreter for Mayor Michael Bloomberg has gone viral. Mayor Bloomberg addresses the public while his signer feels the beat of the hurricane mane! as seen on YouTube.

The stories of devastation and destruction on the local news lately have not provided much in the way of relief unless, that is, you happened to catch sight of a sign language interpreter named Lydia Callis.

And she was pretty hard to miss. Ms. Callis has been a fixture at Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s news briefings, gesticulating, bobbing and nodding her way through the words of city officials as she communicates for the hearing impaired... Deaf Korean Starbucks Barista, It’s All In The Signs

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - Deaf Korean Starbucks barista, it’s all in the signs. Although a Starbucks branch in Seocho-dong, southern Seoul, was bustling with coffee lovers at around noon on Monday, employees worked in silence.

Most baristas at Starbucks franchises receive orders from the cashiers verbally, with shouts of machiatto, mochachino and latte echoing throughout the store.

But Hwang Jin, a 33-year-old Deaf barista, receives her orders via hand gestures. Employees give a thumbs-up to signal an Americano and make a “G” sign to confirm it’s a grande.

“When making foam with milk, those who are hearing-impaired rely on the sensation in their hand when frothing the milk instead of the sound,” barista instructor Sung Jeong-min said. “They are more sensitive to the vibrations of the milk steamer and produce a smoother taste in the coffee.”

Hwang, who lost her hearing after health complications as a 4-year-old, has worked at the Seoul National University of Education Starbucks branch since November 2011... Read more: http://koreajoongangdaily.joinsmsn.com/news/article/article.aspx?aid=2948981

Deaf Police Officers Fight Crime

OAXACA, MX. – Deaf police officers fight crime in Oaxaca. The officers, known as ‘Angels of Silence,’ contribute to keeping the city safe with their heightened vision and ability to read lips.

The 230 surveillance cameras that monitor the streets of the historic downtown area of Oaxaca – a southeastern city that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 – are watched by Deaf police officers who maintain a close eye.

The Oaxaca Police’s Command and Communication Control Center (C4) was reopened in May after chronic maintenance problems had kept it closed for six years. But since the surveillance cameras do not have microphones, the authorities had been unable to determine what was being said by suspected criminals.

So officials turned to State Association for the Deaf to provide personnel with a keen sense of sight and ability to read lips, said Ignacio Villalobos Carranza, deputy secretary for Information and Institutional Development at the Public Safety Secretariat of Oaxaca.

The move has enabled the C4’s Deaf police officers to help prevent crime and assist officers on the streets to apprehend suspects, making the downtown area – a major tourism attraction – safer.

“The first advantage the [Deaf police officers] provide is that they can read lips,” Villalobos Carranza said. “The second advantage is because the Deaf police officers have developed an acute sense of sight – they can see better than most people.”... Restaurant Run & Staffed By Gaza Deaf People

GAZA CITY - Gaza Deaf restaurant aims to break down barriers. Waiters and cooks use sign language; organizers hope the effort will break down bias and barriers.

A restaurant run and staffed by Deaf people opened for business in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, helped by Palestinians seeking to build a more inclusive society where people with disabilities can realize their full potential.

The stylish Atfaluna restaurant near Gaza port stands out in a city with few facilities for the disabled. Waiters and cooks use sign language, guests point to selections from the menu and what ensues is a spontaneous form of communication that organizers hope will break down bias and barriers.

"Deaf people have determination and there are no worries except when it comes to communication, the language problem. At first we may get translators to help us with the speaking clients," supervisor Ayat Imtair told Reuters in sign language...
