Critical Interrogation of Karl White's Speech

Video: Critical Interrogation of Karl White's speech at TEDxUSU. (December 2012)

A Critical Interrogation of Karl White's presentation at TEDxUSU: Establishing a sound foundation for children who are deaf or hard of hearing as seen on http://youtu.be/bfN1RPVuzl0.

Anyone with some level of familiarity with Deaf people will agree that there are some deep philosophical differences in how we interact with, work with, and approach Deaf children.

As such anyone who purports to be an authority on Deaf people has an ethical responsibility to be transparent.

We find it disturbing that individuals such as Karl White continue to blatantly abuse their position by misleading the general public about Deaf people, languages, and medical intervention. This is done through intentional framing, through omission of facts, and through giving appearances of neutrality when in fact bias is present.

Here we discuss some of the things we noted and/or have questions about regarding his recent presentation at TEDxUSU (published on December 5, 2012).

Montreal Institute For The Deaf Ex-Students Allege Horrific Abuses

MONTREAL (CBC) - Montreal School for the Deaf's ex-students allege horrific abuses. Warning: This story with the video contains potentially disturbing content.

Former students at a church-run institute for the Deaf in Montreal have come forward with graphic tales of sexual abuse they allege they suffered during more than four decades.

Quebec's Superior Court authorized a class-action lawsuit last March against members of the Clerics of St-Viateur who worked at the school, formerly known as the Montreal Institute for the Deaf.

The former boarding school was run by the Clerics of Saint-Viateur, a religious congregation founded in 1831.

According to students who attended the all-boys institute between 1940 and 1982, violent sexual assaults were commonplace.

Denis Chalifoux, who alleges he was eight years old when the abuse began in 1968, is one of 64 claimants taking part in the class action against 28 religious staff and six lay workers. Only four or five of the alleged abusers would still be alive today.

Most of the alleged victims' identities are protected in court documents, but Chalifoux came forward to tell his story to CBC's French-language service with the help of a sign language interpreter. He described horrific acts allegedly at the hands of a staff member.

"He showed me his penis. It was in front of me, in my face. I didn't want to look," Chalifoux told Radio-Canada. "He touched my cheek with it. All the while, he was masturbating." ... Sexual Abuses Children At Montreal School For The Deaf

MONTREAL - Lawsuit alleges dozens of clergy abused children at Montreal school for Deaf. Another chapter of Quebec’s dark history of the sexual abuse of children in church-run institutions was aired this week by Radio-Canada. But this was not just any chapter. It threatens to be one of the most horrifying in an already heartbreaking record.

It deals with the sexual abuse of young boys, already vulnerable because of their age but doubly or triply so because they were also Deaf and mute. Their alleged abusers were educated men who promised to set the boys free from their silent world.

Clerical and lay members of a much-admired Roman Catholic teaching order, the Clercs de Saint-Viateur, these men did not set the boys free. The boys who say they were abused ended up in a living hell, terrified of telling anyone what was happening to them. They remained trapped in that hell in adulthood, unable to erase the grotesque images in their heads of masturbating priests and anal rape.

This case may turn out to be the worst ever seen involving the abuse of Deaf children. Unlike the previous record, held by a single Roman Catholic priest, Lawrence Murphy of Wisconsin, in Quebec more than 30 clergy are alleged to have abused the Deaf children in their care, sometimes one after another. (Murphy, who may have sexually assaulted as many as 200 children at a school for the Deaf in Wisconsin, was denounced in 1996 to Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI.

Radio-Canada’s investigative program Enquête called its program The Perfect Victims. The boys came as boarders to the only school for the deaf in the province at the age of 7 or 8. Many were thrilled to be at the school, where for the first time they would be taught to communicate with other children and learn to read and write. ... Sheriff Attacks Deaf Cancer Patient

Sheriff Attacks Deaf Cancer Patient in Alberta, Canada.

Must-see raw video showing a sheriff’s “unjustified” and “excessive” use of force on a mute, deaf man in a Red Deer courthouse has been released.

On Dec. 9, cancer survivor Bill Berry, 52, was paying a traffic ticket when a sheriff told him he didn’t go through the proper security screening, as he had come in through an exit door.

Berry, who is deaf, mute and breathes through his neck with a tube, tried to signal that he couldn’t hear or speak, at which point the sheriff became more forceful and tried to forcibly carry him out.

Berry collapsed to the ground and his stoma tube fell out.

He was unable to breathe until other sheriffs noticed and reinserted it.

A probe conducted by the Solicitor General Office’s Law Enforcement and Oversight Professional Standards Unit, found the sheriff, identified as Thomas Bounds, was fine to advise Berry of his error but was unlawful in physically confronting him “without hesitation.” ... The Language in Space of the Cochlea Implantation

Video: 'The Language in Space' is a play written by Herbert Gantschacher.

The scene "The Cochlea Implantation" (performed by the Deaf actors Horst Dittrich as the father and Reinhard Grobbauer as the son and Werner Mössler as the doctor" shows a cochlea implantation real ironically. It is a real question, the cochlea implantation could be helpful.

On the way of an operation the return to the "hearing world" is technically possible. But the way of operation is not helpful for the Deaf society.

Video by arbos6

What happens to operated Deaf people, which are living now with a cochlea implantation but without a better result of hearing? They are not integrated in the "hearing world" and the Deaf world, they damaged psychological and physical. In such a situation the cochlea implantation destroys Deaf society.

A Heart Touching Story Of A Deaf Girl

Video: "If You Really Knew Me" story in captioned.

A heart touching story of a Deaf girl. her story, her speaking, her heart, poured out. If you are Deaf, hearing impaired, or just don't understand, here is what she said.

I was born with a hearing impairment. I was Deaf completly till the age of 6 because my parents got me hearing devices. But since I first stepped in elementary school, there was never a day someone would push me down, call me names, not talk to me, and mostly, never a day that my own school teacher would respect me.

I was stupid, and I was dumb. I would get best up at school because when I say "what, I can't hear you.." they would take that as sarcasm. I got referrals, suspensions, and got kicked out of school for things i haven't done. I was accused of "smoking in the bathroom" in my 4th grade year. I was "accused of beating up 3 girls in the back of school" when I didn't even know how to fight, and in field trips the principal was always picking me up and taking me to detention because I would get into fights, but they would pick up the ones who fought with me.

I was always in trouble for standing for myself. My own principal abused me, and even had me hold back a year in school for no reason whatsoever, almost fired my mom from her job and I left my last day of school with a concussion and four stab wounds on my back from those tacks that pin papers with on the wall because of this girl that would always fight me. I only had 1 friend in those years. but she was worse than me, she commit suicide at the age of thirteen I was eleven, I call the cops on it cause I had to watch her die.

Video by Aissixx

Sad thing is I couldn't even attend the funeral, the parents had her buried in Arizona. I became suicidal, cut, drank smoked. I joined martial arts later. and I'm still in martial arts now to this day.

In 6th grade, I started having friends. People knew not to mess with me cause all this made me stronger. and I always had to get in a fight. But I was so happy when I didn't lose my first real fight that gained me full respect.

I was wondered though, why people are so cruel still. Especially when someone has a disability they have to live with there whole life, and they laugh about it. Actions may be stronger than words, but no one said words didn't hurt as well. I'm still hurt though. because its been since 6th grade that no ones bothered me until like two weeks ago, I cried my eyes out and just broke down, because this girl in my class would say "I m surprised you can hear the school bell." with a smirk.

If only i could put all those people in my shoes, and show them what its like to be like this, alone, rejected, hurt to judge what you don't understand. This is why I decide to give hugs. because in those times, nobody was there to give me one. No one deserves to live my life, a life without anyone beside them. I Love you guys, I promise. Guys,

If you lived with a disability, a bad habit, a different sexual orientation, or an impairment, and you blame it for all your problems, and what you've been through in your past, DON'T. Thank god for it. why?

It makes you stronger than anyone else that consider thereselves "normal", and you being the "Abnormal, weird, strange" person. It makes you more confident than others, and more tougher through out life. Don't reflect the pain you went through on others, turn that pain into something greater, and give something to others, that you never had before like friendship, love, HUGS kisses.

trust me, you will feel so much better. Published on 19 May 2012 by Aissixx
