Terry loses England captaincy - report

John Terry is believed to have been stripped of the England captaincy, with reports suggesting he was informed of the decision by Football Association chief David Berstein on Friday morning.

Terry is accused of racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand but will not stand trial until July, after this summer's European Championship.

However, after Bernstein contacted the 13 other members of the FA board to seek their views on the situation, it appears English football's governing body has decided it would not be appropriate for Terry to retain the captaincy with such a serious charge hanging over him.

England manager Fabio Capello's public stance has previously been that Terry is innocent until proven guilty, but the Italian will now need to look elsewhere for a skipper to lead his side in Poland and Ukraine.

Terry was stripped of the captaincy two years ago after allegations of an affair with team-mate Wayne Bridge's girlfriend, but was reinstated 13 months later.
