Manchester United's under-pressure goalkeeper David de Gea may require corrective eye surgery this summer.
The Spaniard, signed for £17.8 million from Atletico Madrid last summer, has struggled to establish himself as Edwin van der Sar's replacement at Manchester United. De Gea has made a number of costly mistakes and was dropped by Sir Alex Ferguson at the start of this month following the home defeat by Blackburn.
It is understood he suffers from a condition that affects long-range vision in one eye and which may need laser suregery to correct. The 21-year-old has had the condition since childhood and often wears glasses or contact lenses.
Anders Lindegaard, United's current No 1, says he is enjoying the competition with De Gea, and insists their relationship remains strong: "I am doing everything I can to help David. I enjoy working with him. He's a great lad. He is happy, intelligent, always with a good attitude and we have to push each other. We have to see the glass half full, not half empty, at this point and we have to push each other in the right direction."
On his own elevation to the first team, Lindegaard added: 'I am very proud of what I have made out of this. Three years ago I was in Denmark's second division. Nobody knew my name. When I first came here nobody could pronounce it.
'It has been fantastic to this point and right now is not the time to relax about it, but to keep pushing on, to get better and to get the best for yourself and the club.
